On October 19th to 20th, SLST held its sixth annual Frontier of Genome Engineering (FoGE2018). Vice President and Provost Yin Jie delivered opening remarks, highlighting the remarkable progress that ShanghaiTech University has achieved. The conference was officially opened by SLST Vice Dean Professor Liu Jilong, who focused on the SLST’s achievements in the last few years. Nearly 400 researchers from ShanghaiTech University and other Research Institutes, Universities and pharmaceutical R&D companies attended the two-day conference to present and discuss their cutting-edge research. A total of 25 speakers from China and overseas, affiliated with such institutions as ShanghaiTech University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tongji University, East China Normal University, Harvard University, UC Berkeley, UCSF, and Yonsei University, shared their latest research progress in a variety of subjects, including DNA repair and genome stability, genome engineering tools, therapeutic genome engineering, bioinformatics of genome engineering, genetic screening, genome engineering applied to plant and animal models, and applications of genome engineering. Nearly 45 organizers and volunteers participated in the preparation of the conference.

ShanghaiTech University invests heavily in the training and development of its students. ShanghaiTech’s iGEM 2018 team, consisting of SLST undergraduate students who will travel to MIT to participate in an international competition in November 2018, were also invited to FoGE2018. ShanghaiTech’s student orchestra performed and the best four Poster Award winners were selected and then gave flash talks at the conference.

ShanghaiTech BioFrontier is an annual event, with different topics each year, and is hosted by SLST. During the past six years, topics have included metabolism, neuroscience, cancer biology, cell biology, genetics and genomics, and genome engineering. It is designed to build a platform for academic interaction and research cooperation for young scientists. The 6th ShanghaiTech BioFrontier was sponsored by Banco Santander of Spain.
