Research Interests:
Our laboratory has been interested in biomolecular condensates, assembled by liquid-liquid phase separation. We have been studying (1) how the Cajal body, a nuclear condensate, positively regulates cellular quiescence, (2) how a nuclear RNA-binding protein that forms nuclear bodies facilitates the formation of constitutive heterochromatin, and (3) selective RNA degradation by the factors enriched in another nuclear condensate cleavage bodies. In addition, we recently started to work on the underlying mechanism of fungal pathogenicity.
Research Achievement
We previously studied how RNA interference (RNAi) directs heterochromatin assembly and a histone deacetylase complex imposes transcriptional silencing at heterochromatin. Then, we shifted our interest to biomolecular condensates in the nucleus. We have identified and characterized a critical RNA elimination complex called MTREC and EMC. Surprisingly, the RNA elimination complex turned out to prevent uniparental disomy (a condition where both copies of a chromosome come from the same parent), which could cause human diseases. Moreover, we recently demonstrated that the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe has Coilin, an integral component of the Cajal body, and revealed that Coilin is essential for cellular quiescence, a resting state in which cells do not divide but retain the capacity to revert to the cell cycle in response to appropriate stimuli. In sum, our research has contributed substantially to understanding the roles of nuclear condensates in eukaryotes.
