Group Introduction
Research Area:
Adult stem cell and kidney repair
Research Interests:
The kidneys are an essential organ which is responsible for the excretion of body waste and harmful chemicals into the urine. It has been estimated that millions of people worldwide die from kidney failure and acute kidney injury each year. Moreover, a couple of million people depend on dialysis to survive. Kidney diseases have been a tremendous economic burden globally. Unfortunately, kidney diseases have not received enough attention and are described to be the most neglected chronic diseases. Our laboratory employs the classic model organism Drosophila melanogaster as a model to investigate the regulatory mechanisms of renal stem cells and kidney damage repair, with emphases on uncovering mechanisms regulating renal stem cell quiescence and establishing Drosophila disease models to study kidney diseases such as kidney stone and renal cancer. My long-term vision is to apply knowledge gained from our work into mammals with the hope to better understand homeostasis maintenance of kidney and identify novel therapeutic strategies for kidney conditions.
