The Interaction of Proteins and Nucleic Acids
Research Interests:
The fidelity of protein synthesis is dependent on accurate substrate recognition by the aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase (aaRS) which catalyzes the first step reaction of protein biosynthesis, aminoacylation of tRNA. Each recognizes a single cognate amino acid and covalently attaches it to the correct tRNA. Some aaRSs misactivate incorrect amino acids, but have evolved mechanisms to proofread their errors and edit their mistakes. I am interested in understanding the mechanistic details and molecular interactions that govern aaRS aminoacylation and editing activities. Results from these investigations address basic research questions and also target long-term applications such as antibiotic development. My lab has focused on leucyl-, arginyl- and methionyl- tRNA synthetases to carry out the investigation. Research AchievementRepresentative Publications (*First Author, # Corresponding Author)
